Oscar Coggins said he “felt no bitterness or sadness” watching the Paris Olympics on television, and the revitalised Hong Kong triathlon star has targeted a top-10 finish at the Los Angeles 2028 Games.
The Tokyo Olympian retreated into the shadows to tackle mental and physical issues after withdrawing from last year’s Asian Games race in Hangzhou.
The 25-year-old resumed competition in May, following eight months away, and hit a “big milestone” when he competed in September’s World Triathlon Championship Series (WTS) race in Weihai.
“That was a key moment, after the Asian Games I would have done anything to be back racing a WTS, against all the top guys, one year later,” Coggins said.
The Paris Games coincided with the early phase of Coggins’ comeback and he watched the men’s triathlon race while training on an indoor bike in mainland China.
“I was imagining where I’d be in the race, but it wasn’t a negative feeling, there was no bitterness or sadness,” Coggins told the Post. “I accepted my performance level wasn’t there and I don’t care about being on the start line for the sake of it.
