Houston billionaire Dan Friedkin’s bid for a North American professional team has once again come up short.

A group led by Friedkin, the owner of The Friedkin Group, was among the final four bidders for the MLB’s San Diego Padres. However, multiple reports indicate that the baseball club will be sold to private-equity billionaire José E. Feliciano and his wife, Kwanza Jones. The deal values the Padres at $3.9 billion — the highest valuation ever for an MLB team.

The Friedkin Group did not respond to a request for comment prior to publication.

This is not the first time Friedkin has lost out on a bid for a major North American professional franchise.

In 2025, it was reported that Friedkin was among the suitors for the NBA’s Boston Celtics. However, the team was later sold to William Chisholm, a co-founder of private equity firm STG, for a North American sports team record of $6.1 billion.
