The Houston Christian School girls volleyball team are zone champions.
At the championships in Smithers at Ebenezer Christian Reformed School, the HCS girls came out on top of the eight-team tournament which included Houston Secondary two Smithers teams (Bulkley Valley Christian and Ebenezer) and four eastern zone teams.
Coach Ed Kronemeyer said after winning their pool, the semi-final against Ebenezer was nerve-racking.
As tough as that was, though, he said the final against Bulkley Valley was a gruelling and exhausting back and forth match that went the distance to five sets.
Ultimately HCS prevailed, 25-17, 11-25, 23-25, 25-23, 15-13.
Kronemeyer said he started running a volleyball club for the girls when they were juniors. He saw a lot of potential in them and this was the first they competed as seniors. He said they put in a lot of extra work to get where they are.
Most of the team is Grade 11, which is another nod to them being young and not so experienced,” the coach said. “They are a tight group of friends with hearts for each other and their Lord.”
Paige Sutton was the tournament MVP and Brielle Jaarsma was named an all-star.
“But it took all the players doing their thing and doing it well to make it possible,” Kronemeyer said.
The top two teams earned berths in the provincials in Castlegar, which was scheduled for this weekend (Nov. 27-29).
