Francesca Costa, Co-Founder of Cranky Carrot Juice Co., and the 2025 CO—100 Top Honoree in the Customer Champions category. — Cranky Carrot Juice Co.

Company Name: Cranky Carrot Juice Co.

Location: Houston, Texas

Year Founded: 2020

Website: crankycarrotjuice.co

When Francesca Costa and her husband, Fredy Escobar, moved from Miami to Houston in 2020, they quickly discovered their new community lacked the healthy food options they were used to. Taking matters into their own hands, they began experimenting with at-home juicing — and soon realized they had tapped into something much bigger than a personal habit.

That experiment has since grown into Cranky Carrot Juice Co., a café and juice bar offering cold-pressed juices, kombucha, smoothies, wraps, and bone broth. Thanks to its commitment to putting customers first through health, sustainability, and community, the Houston-based business has been named the 2025 CO—100 Top Honoree in the Customer Champions category.

Filling a gap in Houston’s healthy food scene

In a city short on fresh, convenient options, Costa and Escobar’s juices filled a gap that customers were eager to support. Early sales to friends and coworkers grew into farmers market demand, and soon the couple invested in commercial equipment and opened their own café.

“Our goal is really to create nourishing, truly better-for-you food in a space where ultra-processed options are the norm,” said Francesca Costa, Co-Founder of Cranky Carrot.

To support that mission, Costa went back to school for nutrition, ensuring Cranky Carrot would be a source of informed, science-backed choices for its customers — not just another café. That decision marked a turning point for both the company and Costa herself.

“I left the corporate world because … I didn’t have any passion for it,” Costa said. “But once people started coming to me and asking me … questions related to their health, that’s when I really realized … this is my way of giving back.”

Choosing people over profit, one purchase at a time

At the heart of Cranky Carrot’s success is a philosophy of transparency and care. Customers know exactly what goes into every juice, smoothie, or wrap, because the café is open about its sourcing and preparation.

“We’re extremely transparent with our customers about what we’re putting in our food,” Costa said. “The goal is to get people to … make better food choices [while] also understand[ing] what that actually looks like.”

That philosophy shows up in the details. Eggs, bread, proteins, and coffee are sourced from local farms and small businesses, offering customers fresher, more nutritious meals while strengthening Houston’s local economy.

“We’re trying to choose people over profit,” Costa explained.

For regulars, the real draw to Cranky Carrot isn’t convenience — it’s knowing their purchases support families and entrepreneurs in their own community. And while that customer-first approach has fueled loyalty, it also comes with real costs, setting the stage for growth challenges Costa is determined to tackle without compromising her values.

Expanding without sacrificing purpose

As Cranky Carrot looks ahead, expansion remains both an opportunity and a challenge. The team hopes to open a second location, but doing so while staying true to the principles that define the brand is no small task.

“Because we have a commitment to higher quality sourcing, it is [much] … more difficult than other businesses to make a good profit,” Costa said.

This challenge is compounded by sustainability practices that add cost but reflect the company’s mission.

“We also bottle in glass bottles, which is way more expensive [than] … plastic, but also … better for the customer [and] better for the environment,” Costa explained. “We compost all our food waste [and] we recycle, [but] these things do come with added cost.”

Despite tighter margins, Costa sees these choices as essential to building lasting trust with customers. For her, growth has to be about more than numbers — it must reflect Cranky Carrot’s purpose.

Only four years in, Cranky Carrot has shown that a small café can spark big change in how communities think about food. Its recognition as a CO—100 Customer Champions Top Honoree proves that when it comes to long-term success, putting people first will always win out over shortcuts.
