As electricity demand accelerates across the U.S., Houston is emerging as one of the nation’s most promising hubs for advanced nuclear energy. The region has long been a global leader in energy innovation. Today, that foundation gives companies commercializing advanced nuclear technologies the talent, infrastructure and industrial customers they need to deploy here that can provide reliable, around-the-clock power for manufacturers, data centers and other energy-intensive industries.

That momentum continues to be built, NuScale Power recently announced it will open a new operations center in Houston, bringing project execution and customer support closer to the companies driving demand for advanced nuclear solutions.

An ecosystem built for deployment

Unlike many emerging industries, advanced nuclear can leverage capabilities Houston already possesses.

The region offers a deep concentration of engineering talent, industrial operators, manufacturers, project developers and energy companies with decades of experience delivering large-scale infrastructure projects. Combined with access to capital, research institutions and one of the nation’s largest industrial corridors, Houston provides many of the ingredients needed to move advanced nuclear technologies from demonstration to commercialization.

Industry leaders reinforced that message during the recent Scaling Nuclear in the Nation’s Energy Hub event, hosted by the Texas Nuclear Alliance and the Greater Houston Partnership. Speakers highlighted Houston’s engineering expertise, supply chain, ports, workforce and industrial customer base as competitive advantages that position the region for long-term leadership in advanced nuclear.

Meeting tomorrow’s energy needs

Growing electricity demand is reshaping the energy landscape. AI infrastructure, advanced manufacturing and industrial expansion all require dependable power sources that operate around the clock.

Industry leaders increasingly see advanced nuclear as part of that solution. Beyond electricity generation, emerging technologies are being evaluated for industrial process heat, hydrogen production, water treatment and other applications that align with Houston’s industrial economy. Texas is reinforcing that momentum with the $350 million Texas Advanced Nuclear Development Fund, the nation’s largest state investment in advanced nuclear.

The region’s pro-business environment, research institutions and skilled workforce position the region to compete for manufacturing investment, supply chain growth and future reactor deployment.

NuScale’s expansion reflects that broader trend. As companies look for locations with the talent, infrastructure and industry partnerships needed to scale advanced nuclear, Houston continues to distinguish itself as a place where new energy technologies can move from concept to commercial reality.
