The Swedish furniture giant will close its San Marcos location on November 1, 2026, after deciding not to renew its lease at San Mar Plaza, according to the company’s website. The store opened July 16, 2025, bringing IKEA furniture, home goods and its Swedish Food Market closer to shoppers along the I-35 corridor.
The nearly 35,000-square-foot store was IKEA’s first small-city format in Texas and was designed to serve customers between San Antonio and Austin.
IKEA San Marcos will remain open through November 1, according to the company.
IKEA said it decided not to renew its lease as part of a broader strategy focused on making the brand more affordable, accessible and sustainable, according to its website.
The small-format store opened with more than 2,500 products on display and about 2,000 items available for immediate purchase. Customers could also order IKEA’s full product range for pickup or delivery.
The San Marcos location included home furnishings geared toward the needs of Central Texas shoppers, including nearby college students and residents in the growing I-35 corridor.
IKEA said customers can continue shopping at nearby locations in Round Rock and Live Oak, as well as IKEA locations inside Best Buy stores in South Austin and Alamo Ranch.
The company is also continuing to invest in home delivery, pickup services and its online shopping experience.
The San Marcos store’s closure comes roughly 14 months after its grand opening, when IKEA promoted the location as a more convenient alternative for shoppers who previously had to drive to its larger stores in Round Rock or Live Oak.
