If you’ve been through downtown recently, you’ve likely noticed scaffolding outside the West Chicago City Museum at 132 Main Street. Those preparations mark the beginning of a major restoration and renovation project that will preserve one of the community’s most significant historic landmarks for future generations.

Construction crews began work on a comprehensive series of improvements to the building, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The project reflects the City’s ongoing commitment to preserving West Chicago’s history while ensuring the Museum remains a safe, functional, and welcoming destination for residents and visitors.

Investing in a Historic Landmark

This project will be completed through two separate construction contracts and includes several critical improvements designed to protect the historic structure while improving its long-term performance.

Work includes:

  • Exterior masonry repair and restoration
  • Installation of a new roof
  • Improvements to the roof drainage system, including a new roof hatch
  • Replacement of the building’s heating and air conditioning system
  • New historically appropriate windows

Together, these improvements will reinforce the building’s structural integrity, protect it from water intrusion, improve environmental conditions for preserving historic artifacts, and enhance reliability and safety for visitors and staff.

The two construction contracts are expected to be substantially complete by the end of October. Additional improvements to the Museum are anticipated in 2027 in coordination with construction of the Downtown Modernization & Beautification Project. The scope of those improvements will be subject to future budgeting and City Council authorization.

A Building That Tells West Chicago’s Story

Originally constructed in 1884 as Turner Town Hall, the building has served the community for more than 140 years. It was originally built to house local government, the police department, and fire department, while also providing a gathering place for community meetings, dances, exhibits, and other civic events.

When the Village of Turner became the City of West Chicago in 1896, the building became City Hall and remained the center of municipal government until 1976, when it was transformed into the West Chicago City Museum.

Today, the Museum preserves artifacts, photographs, documents, and archival records that tell the story of West Chicago as Illinois’ first railroad community and the people, businesses, industries, and cultures that have shaped it. The building itself is part of that story, making its preservation an important investment in both the Museum’s future and West Chicago’s historic downtown. The Museum also provides a place where residents of all ages can explore local history and connect with West Chicago’s shared heritage.

Once complete, the improvements will ensure the Museum is ready to continue serving as a focal point for exhibits, educational programming, and community engagement for many years to come.

The Museum Remains Open

Although construction is taking place at 132 Main Street, the West Chicago City Museum remains open in its temporary location at 200 Main Street.

Visitors can continue to enjoy exhibits, conduct historical research, and participate in Museum programming while the project is underway. The Museum is anticipated to return to its permanent home at 132 Main Street in fall 2027.

The City appreciates the community’s patience during construction and looks forward to welcoming visitors back to the historic Museum building following completion of the planned improvements.
