Democratic state lawmakers in Texas have left the state to avoid a vote on redistricting despite Republican pressure.
CHICAGO — Several members of Indiana’s House Democrat Caucus are headed to Chicago on Wednesday to meet with state Democratic lawmakers from Texas.
Those Texas lawmakers have been staying in Illinois for the past several weeks, trying to avoid a vote in the state legislature on redrawing the state’s congressional districts.
Indiana lawmakers could face a similar vote if Gov. Mike Braun calls a special session for the purpose of redrawing Indiana’s map of congressional districts.
Last week, Vice President JD Vance came to Indianapolis to meet with the governor and Republican House and Senate leadership.
Braun said the topic of redistricting came up and characterized the discussion as good, but one where no commitments had been made.
Wednesday afternoon, Aug. 13, 10 members of the Indiana House Democratic Caucus will meet with Texas Democrats in Chicago.
Among those lawmakers traveling to Chicago – Representatives Cherrish Pryor, Ed DeLaney, Mike Andrade, Mitch Gore, Vanessa Summers, Maureen Bauer, Pat Boy, Ragen Hatcher, Earl Harris and Carolyn Jackson – who are all expected to attend the gathering.
