INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The sights, sounds, and colors of Mexican culture will fill the Indiana State Museum on Saturday as the Indianapolis Mariachi and Folklore Festival makes its return to central Indiana.

The festival, founded by Eduardo Luna of Arte Mexicano en Indiana, began four years ago at the Indianapolis Central Library. After a brief hiatus last year, the event is back with more music, dance, and cultural experiences for families to enjoy.

“This year, people can experience three mariachi acts, one solo artist, and about four folkloric dance groups,” Luna said. “There will also be community vendors, artisans, and schools that cater to the Latino community.”

The festival will be hosted in partnership with the Indiana State Museum, giving attendees full access to the museum’s galleries and seasonal exhibits for free. “It’s a great opportunity to give back to our community,” Carla Knapp, the museum’s director of communications, said. “All Hoosiers can come and enjoy the museum while attending this fantastic event.”

In addition to music and dance, visitors will find local vendors, artists, and interactive activities celebrating Mexican and Latin American traditions. Luna highlighted the festival’s reach beyond Mexico, noting that performers include families from other countries, such as Nicaragua. “Mariachi goes beyond Mexico and it’s very popular throughout South America and other parts of the world,” he said.

The festival runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. Admission is free, offering a full day of cultural experiences for families, music lovers, and anyone curious to explore the traditions of the Latino community in central Indiana.
