HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — The annual Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is in Houston from March 2 to March 22 at NRG Park.
The show features concerts, rodeo events, amusement park rides, other events and food vendors selling their dishes.
For one family business, the annual event accounts for the majority of their business’ annual revenue, according to the business owner.
“It is 80% of our business, of our revenue. We’re like retired now, so this really helps us live the life that we are used to living,” Owner of Harlon’s BBQ Candace Harlon said. “In three weeks, you can do what a company does in one year.”
The family business was started by Candace’s father.
“He opened up the barbecue place out of an old gas station, and it was just. It started out from there,” Harlon said.
That vision led to the next generation serving turkey legs, ribs, loaded meat potatoes, chopped brisket sandwiches and more from their rodeo location.
“We have learned if you take care of the business, it will take care of you. It has been tremendous for me as well as offering me a great life,” Harlon said.
Harlon said the goal is to continue her late father’s legacy.
