After last night’s game in San Antonio which was moved a day to accommodate the NBA Cup schedule, the Spurs are playing on the road with a start time less than 24 hours after the start of their last game, which was a 25 point blowout over the Washington Wizards. Last night’s game was relatively close in the first half, but the Spurs put things together late and had enough cushion to rest their starters for a good portion of the fourth quarter as the Silver and Black coasted to an easy home win.
This is the Spurs second second game of a home/road back to back (SEGAHOROBABA) of the year, the first was against the Magic, a game they won 114-112. The Spurs are looking for a similar outcome tonight over the Hawks who lost last night to Charlotte 133-126 after falling behind by as much as 24 in the first half. Jalen Johnson had his best night as a pro, filling up the stat sheet with 43 points, 11 rebounds, and 9 assists. Trae Young also returned to the lineup after an injury and was overshadowed by Nickeil Alexander-Walker who scored 28.
The Hawks can put up points with the best of them, and tonight’s game will be a challenge for the visitors to keep up. The Spurs three point defense has been suspect this season, but improving recently, and it will be put to the test tonight. The Spurs will need to contain Johnson, and keep Trae Young from going off [UPDATE: Young is OUT tonight], while getting good scoring from their guard trio of Fox, Castle, and Harper. The injury report is not yet submitted at the time of writing this article, but Mitch could rest some players tonight, and if Wembanyama’s minutes are limited, we could see a lot more of Sochan as a rim protector. [UPDATE: There are no players out tonight due to injury] It’s going to be interesting to see how that pans out. It’s going to be fun to watch, so smoke ‘em if you got ‘em, and let’s gather round the TV to watch another Spurs win, as they go for their 5th1 consecutive win. Let’s go Spurs.
Trae Young delays the start of the game while he consults with Dylan Harper on hair care tips.
