First, the arrival. Freddy, known on X as @FreddyLA7, posted a video at around 11 p.m. Saturday on the social media platform. He and his road-trip partner were driving on I-10 into Downtown Houston, appropriately blasting BigXthaPlug’s “Hell At Night” (featuring their new friend Ella Langley), the skyline coming into view. “HOUSTON OMG” read the post.
Earlier that day Freddy posted that after listening to Langley’s “Choosin’ Texas” about 3,000 times on his road trip, he and his friend were gifted the opportunity to meet Langley at her June 18 concert in Oklahoma City, Okla.
So things have been going well for Freddy. They got better when he arrived at his hotel room in Houston.
The hotel was the Post Oak Houston, the only dual Forbes Travel Guide five-star accommodation in Texas. Inside his room: Trill Burgers swag and food, a platter of grub from Killen’s Barbecue, a J.J. Watt Texans jersey signed with a special message, merch from the Post Oak and Texans, and an official World Cup ball.
The warm Houston welcome came courtesy of Watt, the Texans legend and current CBS NFL analyst who wanted to show Freddy a little Southern hospitality.
“I got you covered in Houston big dog,” Watt replied to Freddy on June 9, after the German reached out for recommendations along his route.
Freddy called Watt the “nicest person ever” in a follow-up response to a commenter.
Freddy will spend Sunday at NRG Stadium, where the German men’s national team will face Curaçao in the city’s first-ever World Cup match. The whistle blows at noon. Fox, which is broadcasting the match, is even shouting out Freddy in a promotion for the match.
