  • JJ’s Tavern + Grill in Ankeny, Iowa, has closed after a little over a year in business.
  • The restaurant was named the Iowa Beef Industry Council’s Best Burger in Iowa in 2024.

A restaurant that earned the Iowa Beef Industry Council’s Best Burger of 2024 designation closed after more than a year in business.

JJ’s Tavern + Grill at 1975 N. Ankeny Blvd., Suite 117, Ankeny, announced the closure on Facebook.

“After much thought and heartfelt reflection, we’ve made the difficult decision to close the doors of JJ’s Tavern + Grill,” the Facebook post reads.

“We’re deeply grateful to everyone who’s walked through our doors and supported us.”

The restaurant opened in November 2023 and, the following May, won the Iowa Beef Industry Council’s Best Burger in Iowa contest.

More than 7,500 fans of Iowa burgers submitted nominations for more than 500 restaurants in 2024. A group of secret judges reviewed the top 10 vote-getters and determined a final winner.

The JJ’s Tavern menu offered smash burgers, including the Brock Curdy Burger, named after San Francisco 49ers quarterback and former Iowa State player Brock Purdy. The burger came topped with barbecue sauce, ranch, cheese curds, pulled pork, bacon, and more.

JJ’s classic smash burger came with tavern sauce and all the standard toppings.

The restaurant saw an influx of business after being named one of the top 10 burgers in the state last year.
