Joint Base San Antonio Contributes $55 Billion to the Texas Economy, One Third of the State’s Economic Output

SAN ANTONIO (June 21, 2024) – Joint Base San Antonio (JBSA) is the largest military economic contributor in the State of Texas with more than $55 billion going to the Texas economy. Governor Greg Abbott recently announced that Texas’ 14 military installations contributed $151.2 billion in economic impact in Texas — more than one-third of this output is generated by JBSA. The results are based on a study completed by the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts.

“This is great news for San Antonio,” Mayor Ron Nirenberg said. “I believe this growth is due to the City’s strong partnership with the military, our progressive legislative actions, and tangible financial investments supporting JBSA’s mission. We will continue strengthening our partnership with the military through the superb work of our Military Transformation Task Force, Military and Veterans Affairs Department, and my annual visits to the Pentagon.”

Since 2019, Joint Base San Antonio’s contribution has increased 33 percent. Contributing to the growth at JBSA are additional military positions in the areas of aviation, cyber, and health care. In San Antonio, the military continues to be the top employer and accounts for approximately 242,000 direct and indirect jobs.

“San Antonio has not lost any military missions or installations in the past two decades due to its opposition to encroachment that threatens compatible land use at Camp Bullis and our three main installations,” Juan Ayala (Maj. Gen., USMC, Ret.), Director of Military and Veteran Affairs said. “In addition, we have invested city funds and secured state and federal grants totaling more than $140 million supporting military commander mission priorities.”

The investments include funding for infrastructure projects enhancing energy resiliency, critical infrastructure, force protection, and military spouse and transitioning servicemember employment.
