A notable key free agent is reportedly drawing plenty of interest amongst several league contenders this season.
According to NBA insider Marc Stein, veteran swingman Lonnie Walker IV is being targeted for his playing service, with the likes of the Philadelphia 76ers, Minnesota Timberwolves, Miami Heat, Denver Nuggets, and the Boston Celtics emerging as his potential suitors.
Walker IV’s recent playing background
Walker is currently playing for the Lithuanian EuroLeague club Zalgiris Kaunas. He holds a $450,000 buyout option with them should he pursue a return to the NBA before Feb. 18.
Left unsigned for a full contract this past summer, the 25-year-old initially joined the Celtics on an Exhibit 10 deal. He was eventually waived by the reigning champs ahead of the 2024-25 campaign due to cap complications, forcing him to go overseas instead.
Walker IV, a six-year pro who had key stops in the San Antonio Spurs and Los Angeles Lakers, averaged 9.7 points, 2.2 boards, and 1.3 assists with the Brooklyn Nets last 2023-24 season.
Which team fits the best for Walker IV?
Known for his scoring ability, Walker IV can certainly help the five groups mentioned. As an instant spark plug off the bench for most of his career, there should be no question about how the former Miami sensation can pour reliable production at the offensive side.
Of all teams acknowledged, the Nuggets make the most sense for Walker IV. With a relatively passive second unit that only boasts Russell Westbrook, Denver couldn’t be more open about the possibility of bringing Walker in as an added scoring punch.
Nevertheless, we can only wait and see how Walker will ultimately decide the best situation he can get in his potential league comeback for the next couple of weeks.
