James (Jimmy) Hughes Jr., 38, Chief Safety Officer, United Cleanup Oak Ridge
James (Jimmy) Hughes Jr. is a Clinton native who has spent close to 20 years with UCOR, a contractor that works for the U.S. Department of Energy in cleaning up contaminated sites in Oak Ridge.
Hughes, who earned an MBA from King University and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Phoenix while employed, believes in time management and hard work. It’s what helped him rise to the role of chief safety officer, he said.
In 50 to 100 words, introduce yourself to our readers
I’m the chief safety officer for UCOR in Oak Ridge, but I am just as proud of being a husband and father of four. My career began as a union laborer before I spent seven years in night school, earning an MBA and opening the door to executive leadership. I credit my success to faith, family and a commitment to helping others grow − values I carry from my family farm into one of the region’s most important missions.
When you reflect on your career so far, which achievement stands out most?
Working my way from union laborer to chief safety officer and earning my MBA at night while supporting my family, proving that hard work and perseverance can turn obstacles into opportunities.
What is the greatest professional obstacle you’ve had to overcome and how did you overcome it?
The greatest obstacle I’ve overcome was balancing full-time work, night school and family responsibilities while pursuing my MBA. It taught me resilience, time management and the value of staying committed to long-term goals.
What will you focus on in 2026?
In 2026, I want to focus on advancing Oak Ridge’s cleanup mission efficiently and safely while strengthening ties to the community.
What is your biggest professional dream?
My biggest professional dream is to leave behind a legacy of safety leadership that inspires others to believe hard work and integrity can change lives.
What mistake did you learn the most from?
At times I pushed too hard for quick results. That mistake taught me patience and the importance of steady, lasting progress.
What motivates you?
I’m motivated by the opportunity to protect and develop others, ensuring workers go home safe and grow in their careers.
What is the most overrated piece of business advice you’ve heard?
“Follow your passion.” Passion is important. But without discipline, persistence and willingness to do the hard work, passion alone won’t carry you.
What trait do you most want in a co-worker?
Integrity. What I appreciate most in a co-worker is honesty and consistency.
What about Knoxville would you like to improve?
I’d love to see more opportunities for young professionals so that Knoxville continues to be a place where families thrive.
What don’t people know about you?
Most people don’t know that while my role requires leading and speaking, I’m naturally more of an introvert.
