Grocery store company Kroger is planning to close one of its McKinney locations, company representative John Votava confirmed.

An exact closing date has not been announced, but staff at the store said the location is expected to close by the end of the summer. The store, located at the northeast corner of University Drive and US 75, offers a variety of grocery products including fresh produce, frozen meals and canned foods, as well as household supplies, pharmaceutical items and more.

The closure is a part of a roughly 60-store closure the company announced earlier this year, a company news release states. Associates at the affected stores are expected to be offered the ability to transfer to a different Kroger location.

“This closure is part of a larger company-wide decision to run more efficiently and ensure the long-term health of our business,” Votava said in an email.

Kroger has two other McKinney locations, including one at the southwest corner of University Drive and Lake Forest Drive that was remodeled in late 2024. Another Kroger store is located in McKinney at the northeast corner of Eldorado Parkway and Lake Forest Drive, according to its website. The company has seen recent store openings in North Texas, including news locations in Melissa, Plano and Fort Worth.

Following the closure of the East McKinney store, the nearest grocery stores in East McKinney include Walmart, WinCo Foods, Sam’s Club and Target.

Projects include work on the Central Tri-State Tollway (I-294), the new I-490 Tollway, and other systemwide improvements. “Construction projects are underway throughout the Tollway system… These contracts will enable us to keep other parts of our system in good repair,” said Illinois Tollway Executive Director Cassaundra Rouse. June contract awards include: Construction contracts: • $20.5 million to ICC Group Inc., Elburn, for bridge rehabilitation on the Mile Long Bridge along the Veterans Memorial Tollway (I-355). • $4.1 million to Foundation Mechanics, Chicago, for drainage improvements on the Tri-State Tollway (I-94/I-294) from Townline Road to Half Day Road and at Walters Avenue. Professional engineering services: • $5.6 million to Thomas Engineering Group, Oak Park, for construction management of intelligent transportation system upgrades on I-294. • $5 million to Globetrotters Engineering Corp., Chicago, for on-call construction management on the I-490 Tollway. • $3 million to WBK Engineering, St. Charles, for on-call systemwide design services. The contracts include participation from 20 certified disadvantaged, minority- and women-owned business enterprise (D/M/WBE) firms and four veteran-owned firms. D/M/WBE participation ranges from 18.09% to 95% per contract, while veteran-owned business participation ranges from 2.14% to 5.83%. Engineering contracts are awarded through a qualifications-based selection process under Illinois law, while construction contracts are awarded through competitive bidding. Board meetings and bid openings are broadcast at www.illinoistollway.com.
