Multiple streets were closed off Thursday following a deadly officer-involved shooting in the South Los Angeles neighborhood of Hyde Park.
The shooting was reported at 6:20 p.m. Thursday at Hyde Park and Crenshaw boulevards, where Gang Enforcement Detail Unit officers saw two men arguing south of Hyde Park. When the officers went to investigate after the confrontation turned physical, one suspect fired several shots, LAPD Officer David Cuellar told City News Service.
The LAPD officers returned fire, striking the suspect, who was pronounced dead at the scene by Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics.
It was not immediately clear if the suspect was shooting at the officers or the man with whom he was arguing, Cuellar said.
Cuellar said LAPD personnel were interviewing the second man, who was not injured in the shooting. No officers were injured and the firearm used by the suspect was recovered at the scene, according to the LAPD.
More than a dozen police car units were stationed along Crenshaw Boulevard. NewsChopper4 was over the scene where officers formed a skirmish line to keep crowds away.
