Clark County has designated the Las Vegas Chinatown as a redevelopment area, now directing sales and property taxes towards the project. The remodel is estimated to take over 10 years, according to the Las Vegas Review Journal.
CoStar reports that the city’s official Chinatown spans Spring Mountain Road from Las Vegas Boulevard to Rainbow Boulevard. The project focuses on redeveloping Chinatown Plaza, a shopping center filled with Asian restaurants and shops.
The project consultant, Minjia Yan, said, “For this redevelopment plan, our focus is a community-driven redevelopment plan that is centered on placemaking and placekeeping, which includes urban redevelopment, economic development and cultural preservation.”
According to the Las Vegas Review Journal, the project consists of 3 phases.
The 1st phase, projected to begin at the end of the year and conclude by Lunar New Year 2026, involves construction of a pedestrian walkway between Chinatown Plaza and Shanghai Plaza. Phase 2 aims to improve Spring Mountain Road starting on the first quarter of 2026. The 3rd phase proposes construction to widen walkways with the goal of making the area more pedestrian friendly, according to County Commissioner Justin Jones.
Jones stated that the roadway construction will cost over $30 million, and that the entire project “will cost 10s of millions of dollars.”
As noted by CoStar, business owners such as Maya Kwong, the owner of Xiao Long Dumplings restaurant in Chinatown Plaza, believe that the redevelopment will attract more visitors, therefore helping her restaurant and other businesses in the area.
