Phoenix-area freeways: Everything you need to know to get around

Several freeways traverse the Phoenix area, including many state routes that loop around the Valley, providing easy access to the different regions.

The Republic

What is the construction? The Arizona Department of Transportation is working to improve several cross streets along Interstate 10 in downtown Phoenix and Ahwatukee.

Project elements include:

  • Milling existing asphalt and adding new asphalt
  • Reconstructing curb ramps and driveways at various locations to be compliant with Americans with Disability Act (ADA) guidelines
  • Repairing pavement and adding new curbs and gutters
  • Replacing sidewalk, curb and gutter at the the westbound I-10 on-ramps (Seventh Street only)
  • Replacing existing sidewalk, median pavers and tree grates at various locations

Where is the construction? Construction will take place along Seventh Street between McDowell Road and Roosevelt Street, as well as on Elliot, Warner and Ray roads and Chandler Boulevard west of I-10.

How long will construction take? Construction began in January 2026 and is expected to wrap up by fall 2026.

Will there be closures? Yes, daily lane restrictions will be needed on the cross streets, and temporary closures of the westbound I-10 on- and off-ramps at Seventh Street are expected, according to ADOT.

Current lane restrictions include eastbound Warner Road between I-10 and 51st Street. Check az511.gov or the project website to stay up-to-date on closures.
