SAN ANTONIO – For 40 years, Jessie Degollado has appeared on our screens covering stories and being the voice for so many who often didn’t have one.

From the border to all sides of San Antonio, she has been a constant force in our newsroom and has truly become a journalism legend, especially to Latinas in the field.

Degollado is an award-winning journalist from Laredo and started at KSAT 12 in 1984.

“I walk in to the newsroom, the old newsroom, and it just seemed like a huge cavern to me,” Degollado said, recalling her first day at KSAT 12. “I was so overwhelmed, but mostly I was a little intimidated because if you knew Jim Boyle, he was very much a straight-up kind of news director. But he was so kind to me, you know, and I knew he was rough and gruff when he had to be. But he was so gracious and kind, and he made me feel welcome.”

Degollado has covered many historic events and interviewed many people and public figures.

“I’m sad to be retiring and saying goodbye to 40 years and my family of 40 years, but I’m also so excited,” Degollado said. “You know, what I leave behind is so hopeful. There’s so much promise and talent, and the sky’s the limit now.”

When asked what she will miss most, Degollado says she will miss the people of San Antonio.

“The people, the people of San Antonio, who I have met at their best and at their worst times. I’m going to miss them because I’ve met so many of you. I love you, San Antonio, I truly do,” she said.
