Cabot, Ark. (KATV) — Get ready to fiesta, Little Rock! This Saturday, Plaza Frida will host the “Not Cinco de Mayo” festival, a vibrant celebration of Mexican culture, complete with food, live ballet performances, and local vendors.
Jamie Taylor, the event coordinator, said, “Saturday is going to be amazing. We’re going to have another cultural event at Plaza Frida, which is down in southwest Little Rock on 4001 West 65th Street.”
The festival promises a fun-filled day for the whole family, featuring a kids’ area with mechanical bulls, bouncy houses, and face painting.
But the main attraction is the stage showcasing the rich culture and heritage of Mexico. “We’re really excited to just show off Mexican culture and heritage and celebrate the holiday,” Taylor said.
Curious about the festival’s unique name? Taylor explained, “It’s called ‘Not Cinco de Mayo’ because we never hold it on Cinco de Mayo. It’s always a day before, a couple days after.”
The aim is to highlight the cultural significance of the holiday, which is often misunderstood in the United States.
Ballet Folklórico dancers, known for their colorful costumes and lively performances, are a highlight of the event. “My favorite thing about coming to the festival is just seeing everybody there and the people, and then just the smiles of us dancing and performing,” one dancer shared.
The festival runs from 5 to 9 p.m., so be sure to arrive early to enjoy all the festivities.
“You’ll want to show up dressed to impress,” Taylor advised. “You probably won’t have a cool dress like this, but you can come and get one in advance at the plaza.”
Plaza Frida is more than just a venue for cultural events.
It’s a community hub where people can connect and celebrate Hispanic heritage. “It’s a place to showcase Hispanic heritage, but also with the Latino and Hispanic culture that’s here in Little Rock to get to know your neighbors,” Taylor said.
The plaza also supports small businesses and offers opportunities for community engagement through events like this.
So, mark your calendars and join the celebration this Saturday at Plaza Frida. It’s a fiesta you won’t want to miss!
