The college football season is nearly here, and a handful of players around the country are facing pivotal 2024 seasons to put themselves on the map.

One of those players is LSU Tigers defensive back Major Burns. Chris Hummer with CBS Sports listed Burns as one of the top players with the most to prove in fall camp. Burns is making the switch from safety to the slot, and Hummer believes that he’ll have to play a key role on LSU’s defense.

“There’s a chance LSU’s entire secondary is turned over in 2024,” Hummer wrote. “Multiple starters have departed, transfers and freshmen have come in looking to make an impact, and the two most senior players in the room (Burns, Sage Ryan) are primed to play new positions…Burns, who led LSU in tackles last year, needs to be much steadier in coverage. While Burns drew positive reviews this spring for his improved play, LSU could really use a strong camp from the only real proven veteran presence in its cornerback room.”

Burns was a 4-star recruit back in 2020 out of Baton Rouge. Despite being right next to LSU, he originally committed to play for the Georgia Bulldogs. He played just one season for the SEC rival before transferring back home to play for the Tigers.

Over four college football seasons, Burns has only put up modest numbers. He’s racked up 161 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss, seven pass breakups, and two interceptions in 33 games.

By moving from safety to the slot, Burns may be able to unlock his full potential and help take LSU to the College Football Playoff in 2024.
