Lyle Odelein Remembered By Several TeamsOdelein’s Health Battle and Major Recovery

A former veteran NHL defenseman who once lifted the Stanley Cup has died at the age of 58, following serious health issues over the better part of the last decade.

Lyle Odelein, who played for eight NHL teams in his 16-year career, died on Friday after suffering a heart attack, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

The NHL’s Alumni Association released a statement on social media following the news.

Lyle Odelein Remembered By Several Teams

“Lyle was one of those people who left an impression wherever he went,” the statement read, noting that the Alumni Association was “deeply saddened” by his passing.

“A fierce competitor on the ice and a loyal teammate and friend away from it, he brought toughness, heart, humour and an unmistakable passion to everything he did.”

Odelein was selected in the seventh round of the 1986 draft by the Montreal Canadiens. He would appear in over 1,000 NHL games with Montreal, the New Jersey Devils, Phoenix Coyotes, Columbus Blue Jackets, Chicago Blackhawks, Dallas Stars, Florida Panthers and Pittsburgh Penguins.

Odelein was named the first captain in Columbus Blue Jackets history in 2000, a fact the team acknowledged in its own post remembering him.

“Lyle is a significant part of our history,” the Blue Jackets said.

“He left an indelible mark on our organization and on our community. On the ice, Lyle was a fierce competitor and a Stanley Cup champion. Off the ice, he was warm, kind and quick with a smile and a kind word. He was a friend to all who knew him and will be sorely missed.”

Odelein’s Health Battle and Major Recovery

In 2018, Odelein was hospitalized and diagnosed with a blood infection and sepsis. Days later, he was in a medically induced coma, breathing with the help of a ventilator. The infection had traveled to his heart and had begun to affect other organs.

According to The Athletic, Odelein underwent procedures to transplant a heart valve, kidney and liver. The successive surgeries lasted around 24 hours in total, and Odelein was diagnosed with temporary paralysis.

He triumphantly returned to Montreal in October of 2018, joining his former teammates in celebration of their 1993 Stanley Cup victory.

“I don’t remember a lot because I was in a coma and paralyzed from my neck down,” Odelein told the Montreal Gazette in an interview leading up to the ceremony.

“There’s stuff that I didn’t even know that they were doing and neither did my wife, actually. It was really hard. Now I’m walking around with a cane and stuff, but things are going really, really well.

It’s unbelievable. I can tell you one thing, there is a God. I had a five percent chance to live and if it wasn’t for my wife, I wouldn’t be here today.”

The Canadiens said that they were “saddened” to learn of Odelein’s passing, adding that the team “wishes to offer its most sincere condolences to Lyle Odelein’s family, friends and close ones.”

Rest in peace to Lyle Odelein, and we send our condolences to his fans, family, friends and loved ones during this difficult time.
