A Massachusetts man is dead after a fiery crash in which a vehicle crashed into a barrier in South Boston and fell approximately 40 feet onto the roadway below. Casey Brown, 31, of Plymouth, was identified Wednesday as the victim of Tuesday morning’s crash on the Massachusetts Avenue Connector ramp to Frontage Road.Several ramps were closed in the area of the Southeast Expressway, and traffic was heavy for hours after the crash, which happened at about 9:40 a.m. Wednesday. MBTA and Amtrack service was temporarily halted as a result of the crash. Boston Fire Commissioner Paul Burke confirmed the vehicle crashed into the barrier of the Massachusetts Avenue Connector at the intersection with the Frontage Road and plummeted an estimated 40 feet.Massachusetts State Police officials said the vehicle, a 2004 Dodge Durango, fell onto the Exit 16 offramp from Interstate 93.”It was on fire when it landed down below, on the ramp down here, and the person inside did not survive,” Burke said. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner was seen in the area during the investigation. Crews hid the wreckage inside tents while they worked.”It’s a tragic scene, we were fortunate there was no car underneath when it came down from the overpass,” said Burke. Damage was visible on the barrier at the intersection, which is near Interstate 93 and the Greater Boston Food Bank. The fence was smashed outward. Witnesses estimated the vehicle was traveling at about 75 mph before impact. “I heard a big, ‘kaboom,’ and the vehicle flew up over the side and landed on the ground,” said one witness. “It was on fire when it came over, then landed on fire when it went over the ramp,” Burke said. Video recorded by Alison Rheaume as she passed the area shows the wreckage burning as a Boston EMS ambulance keeps back. Some firefighters are seen near the fire. Temporary fencing was placed around the barrier. The crash is being investigated by multiple Massachusetts State Police units and members of the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office.

BOSTON —

A Massachusetts man is dead after a fiery crash in which a vehicle crashed into a barrier in South Boston and fell approximately 40 feet onto the roadway below.

Casey Brown, 31, of Plymouth, was identified Wednesday as the victim of Tuesday morning’s crash on the Massachusetts Avenue Connector ramp to Frontage Road.

Several ramps were closed in the area of the Southeast Expressway, and traffic was heavy for hours after the crash, which happened at about 9:40 a.m. Wednesday. MBTA and Amtrack service was temporarily halted as a result of the crash.

Boston Fire Commissioner Paul Burke confirmed the vehicle crashed into the barrier of the Massachusetts Avenue Connector at the intersection with the Frontage Road and plummeted an estimated 40 feet.

Massachusetts State Police officials said the vehicle, a 2004 Dodge Durango, fell onto the Exit 16 offramp from Interstate 93.

“It was on fire when it landed down below, on the ramp down here, and the person inside did not survive,” Burke said.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner was seen in the area during the investigation. Crews hid the wreckage inside tents while they worked.

“It’s a tragic scene, we were fortunate there was no car underneath when it came down from the overpass,” said Burke.
