HOUSTON – A man has died after being shot by Houston police officers during a confrontation.
The two officers said they initially stopped two men in front of a gas station and convenience store along Werner Street right off I-45 Wednesday night.
They said the men were loitering at the store, which had a ‘No Trespassing’ sign.
The officers, who were both women, discovered one of the men had outstanding warrants. When they started to arrest him, police said they discovered he had a gun in his belt.
“While they were attempting to put handcuffs on him, one of the female officers could feel a weapon around the suspect’s waistband,” said Assistant Chief Keith Seafous.
They said that the man realized the officers knew he had a gun. “They started giving him verbal commands to be still, you know, and put your hands behind your back. At that point, the suspect started fighting with both of the females,” Seafous said.
They all fell to the ground, fighting over the gun, Seafous said, and then one of the officers shot the man.
He later died at the hospital.
The shooting is under investigation.
