Maria Torres has built a growing North Shore business presence around food, hospitality and a commitment to bringing people together.
Now, the Marblehead entrepreneur is being recognized for it.
Torres, owner of Maria’s Gourmet and Fine Foods and the Driftwood Restaurant, was recently honored as a 2026 Latino Excellence on the Hill Award recipient, joining Latino leaders from across Massachusetts during a celebration at the State House marking Hispanic Heritage Month.

“Maria Torres has built more than a successful business — she has created places where people feel welcome and connected,” Armini said. “Her entrepreneurial spirit, warmth and commitment shine through in everything she does. I’m proud to recognize Maria’s accomplishments and the positive impact she has made across our communities.”
Torres, who is Puerto Rican, has drawn on the culinary traditions she grew up with to serve Puerto Rican, Caribbean and American food through her family-run business, Maria’s Gourmet and Fine Foods in Marblehead.
Her business has grown beyond its original location. A few months ago, Torres took ownership of the Driftwood Restaurant, the longtime Marblehead institution that has served generations of residents for nearly 60 years.
Torres has said she intends to preserve the Driftwood’s traditions and familiar atmosphere while taking on stewardship of the beloved restaurant.
She has also expanded beyond Marblehead, opening Maria’s Gourmet Cafe in Swampscott.
For Torres, the State House recognition was a celebration not only of her businesses, but also of her Puerto Rican heritage and the community that has supported her.
“I am truly honored and grateful to be recognized as one of this year’s Latino Excellence on the Hill Award nominees, Class of 2026!” Torres said.
“It was incredibly meaningful to join Latino leaders from across Massachusetts in celebrating the contributions, leadership, and strength of our community during Hispanic Heritage Month.”
Torres thanked Armini and her staff for the nomination, as well as state Sen. Brendan Crighton and the Massachusetts Black and Latino Legislative Caucus, which hosted the event.
“I am proud of my heritage, thankful for the community that has supported me throughout my journey, and deeply honored to receive this recognition,” Torres said.
