SANDY, Utah (KUTV) — After seven years serving on the Sandy City Council, Councilwoman Marci Houseman submitted her resignation.

The Sandy City Council announced her resignation on Thursday effective Jan. 3, 2027. Houseman will continue to serve representing the Council’s District 4 and as Council Chair through that date.

Houseman said her growing business and the increasing demands that come with it were her reasons from stepping away from her position.

“My reason for resigning is bittersweet,” Houseman said. “Bitter, because I’ll be stepping away from serving my fellow Sandy residents which has been one of the great honors of my life. Sweet, because it is a direct result of the growth of my business and the increasing demands of entrepreneurship on my time and attention.”

Houseman was first elected to the City Council in November 2019, first taking office at the start of January 2020. She was elected to represent District 4 in 2023 and has served as the Council Chair since July 2026.

Brooke Christensen, Sandy City Council Vice Chair, described Houseman’s years as a council member as being “based in selfless service.”

“We are grateful for the time, energy, and leadership she has brought to the Council,” Christensen said. “We are committed to selecting her successor in an open and transparent process and encourage applications from any eligible District 4 residents who want to serve.”

The Sandy City Council said it was required to fill Houseman’s seat with a qualified applicant within 30 days of receiving a resignation notice. Applications opened Thursday and will close at 5 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 20.

The Council said it will plan to interview qualified applicants during a public meeting on Dec. 1, with plans to appoint Houseman’s successor the same night. The appointed councilmember is expected to take office Jan. 4, and will serve the remainder of Houseman’s term, which was set to end in December 2027.

To be considered as an eligible candidate, applicants be a registered voter, have lived in Sandy for at least the past 12 months, and be a resident of District 4, which spans east of 700 East and south of Dimple Dell Road.

Applicants can fill in person with City Recorder at City Hall, located at 10000 Centennial Parkway.

Voters can expect to elect a representative for District 4 during the November 2027 municipal elections.
