A wicked fast ride between Boston and New York is expected to roll out later this year. The MBTA shared that it anticipates launching its first-ever golden bullet train later this year, the fastest MBTA train to date! The initiative stems from the 400% jump in ridership on inbound and outbound Amtrak trains connecting Boston and Manhattan.

The speedy development of this train comes from a private investor who recently joined the neighborhood at South Station’s new Ritz Carlton tower. The train is expected to reach speeds of 200-miles-per-hour, that’s over 20 times faster than the fastest MBTA Commuter Rail! This could also make Boston’s golden bullet train among the fastest in the nation.

MBTA announces bullet train between Boston and NYC

The 20 cart train will be imported from abroad, making the implementation much quicker. To start, the MBTA will operate one daily outbound and inbound trip between the two cities.

The outbound train departs Boston South Station at 6 AM, arriving at 8:30 AM. That slashes the regular commute in half! Inbound trains will depart Moynihan Train Hall daily at 7 PM, arriving at 9:30 PM.

Unlike Amtrak fares which are subject to fluctuate based on demand, the MBTA is adamant that this golden bullet train serve commuters and their desire to save time, and money. That’s why the train will have a fixed, $33 rate.

It was a no brainer to bring this bullet train technology to Boston and New York. They are two of America’s most powerful and fast-moving cities, so they need the transit technology to match the citizens’ speed. As for the color, it was a no brainer. Golden represents the desire for the train to be a golden ticket between the two cities, said the MBTA commissioner in a statement.

This new train roll out will hopefully help ease Boston traffic and make the trip to the Big Apple more effecient for everyone! The MBTA may potentially add more than one daily train as demand grows, and look into adding more trainsets with time. Tickets will be available n the MBTA ticket app or purchasable with a credit card onboard for $34 each way.

Happy April Fools’!
