MERCED, Calif. — Merced College Performing Arts is thrilled to present In the Heights, the Broadway hit by Lin-Manuel Miranda and Quiara Alegría Hudes. The production opens Friday, April 4, and runs through Sunday, April 13, at the Merced College Theater.
Set in 2008 in New York City’s Washington Heights neighborhood, In the Heights is a vibrant, heartfelt story that explores family, identity, and the pursuit of dreams. With soaring music, electrifying dance, and rich storytelling, the musical captures the everyday joys and challenges of a tight-knit Latino community on the cusp of change.

This large-scale production includes 26 performers and a 20-person backstage tech and crew team, supported by a 9-piece live orchestra under the direction of Musical Director Alexander Simon. In total, more than 60 students, community members, faculty, and staff are contributing to the show’s success, making it one of Merced College’s most ambitious performing arts productions to date.
“This show is a true celebration of Latin heritage, community, and resilience,” said Director Lauren McCue-Bryx. “It’s also a reflection of who we are at Merced College—a Hispanic-Serving Institution rooted in the Central Valley and proud to elevate diverse voices and stories on our stage.”
The cast and crew hail from across the region, including Merced, Atwater, Winton, Los Banos, Turlock, Hilmar, Newman, Modesto, and beyond.
Jeshamon Volkerts, who plays the lead role of Benny, is a second-year theatre major from Merced and has been doing theatre in our community his entire life.
“I play the role of Benny, who’s called the ‘honorary Latino’ in the show,” Volkerts said. “I’m proud to be part of a production that uplifts and shares the relatable stories of Latino Americans, whether they immigrated here or were born here. Especially in today’s sociopolitical climate, telling these stories with care and authenticity is more important than ever.”
Scenic and lighting design for the production is by Chad Phillips, with costume design by Christine Silveira. The production also features memorable choreography from Colby Hanning, Natalie Mara, and Beth Christensen. Carlo Martinez contributed dramaturgy and Spanish-language consultation to ensure cultural authenticity and nuance throughout the show.
Lisa Fuentes, a second-year Merced College student from Los Banos who is double majoring in Theatre and Psychology, designed the makeup and hair for the production and assisted with costumes.
“I am of Latin descent and am excited to work on a show that celebrates my culture,” Fuentes said. “The familial bonds in this show speak to me and my upbringing.”

Tickets can be purchased online in advance or at the Box Office one hour before each performance. Free parking is available in lots P5 and P7. Please note that tickets are nonrefundable and nonexchangeable.
