New Delhi: Jimmy Donaldson, better known as MrBeast and the world’s most subscribed YouTuber, is facing legal action in Mexico following the release of a video shot at multiple protected archaeological sites.

The video, titled “I Survived 100 Hours in an Ancient Temple”, was uploaded on 10 May and has already amassed over 55 million views, according to CNN. It featured Donaldson and his team exploring several historic locations including Calakmul, Chichen Itza, and Balamkanche, sites recognised for their cultural and archaeological significance.

Mexico’s Ministry of Culture and the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) have confirmed that legal proceedings are under way. The video had sparked criticism from archaeologists, the public, and officials, particularly for its depiction of activities within restricted zones that were typically off-limits even to researchers.

In one segment, MrBeast was seen remarking, “It’s unbelievable that the government is allowing us to do this. It’s truly crazy. Not even archaeologists are allowed in here.”

Among the sites shown in the video is the Temple of Kukulkan at Chichen Itza in Yucatán, a pre-Hispanic pyramid also known as El Castillo and recognised as one of the Seven Wonders of the World.

Authorities had expressed concern over unauthorised filming and access to areas considered sacred and culturally sensitive. The incident has reignited ongoing debates in Mexico about the commercial use of heritage sites and the need for stronger enforcement of cultural protection laws.

Further details about the nature of the legal action have not been disclosed. Neither MrBeast nor his representatives have responded publicly to the reports as of this publication.
