Miami, Allen Morris Company join forces to transform Kirk Munroe park

A $5 million package of upgrades is set to transform Kirk Munroe Park and Fuller Street in Coconut Grove, including new playgrounds, tennis court renovations, landscaping and decorative elements funded jointly by the city and the adjacent Ziggurat developer.

The funding agreement was approved by the Miami City Commission on Jan. 22, allocating $3 million from the city and $2 million from the Allen Morris Company, the developer behind the neighboring Ziggurat project. The redesign is expected to enhance public spaces while complementing the five-story, mixed-use development immediately south of the park.

The Ziggurat project, approved by the commission in December 2025, is a 1.7-acre development at 3101 Grand Ave. featuring a five-story office building with 100,000 square feet of space, a condominium with 19 ultra-luxury residences and approximately 40,000 square feet of ground-floor retail. The project, designed by Oppenheim Architecture with interiors by Collarte Interiors, and with landscape design directed by Naturalficial, will also feature a rooftop restaurant with Biscayne Bay views, as well as a central landscaped courtyard with pedestrian-friendly paseos connecting the development to the adjacent public spaces and surrounding neighborhood.

Planned upgrades to Kirk Munroe Park include resurfacing, striping and fencing the tennis courts; rebuilding the hitting wall; exterior improvements to the tennis center; creating a children’s play area; and adding wood decking under the park’s banyan tree, landscaping and water features. Decorative perimeter fencing and turf replacement will also be completed as part of the park enhancements.

Fuller Street will be redesigned with decorative pavers, landscaping, specimen trees, signage and other aesthetic improvements. The developer will lead the design and construction process, with final plans submitted to the city commission for approval before work begins. Any cost overruns beyond the $5 million total are to be covered proportionally by the city and developer.

Kirk Munroe Park serves as a popular recreational hub in Coconut Grove, featuring tennis courts, a playground, hitting walls and open lawns. Named after Kirk Munroe, a pioneering author, explorer and early Coconut Grove settler, the park honors his role in shaping the community, including founding the Biscayne Bay Yacht Club and helping establish the Coconut Grove Library. The planned improvements aim to preserve and enhance the park’s usability for children, families and residents while creating a seamless connection with the Ziggurat development’s courtyard and pedestrian paseos.

Construction on the Ziggurat was expected to begin in late 2025, according to the developer’s website, with completion projected by the end of 2027.
