Miami University in Ohio has approved plans for a new multi-purpose arena, while the University of New Mexico (UNM) has struck an arena naming-rights deal with Nusenda Credit Union.
Miami University’s board of trustees has approved a resolution authorising the construction of a new arena at Cook Field. The expected price tag of the arena is around $242m (£182m/€209m), with up to $281m authorised by the board for the arena and associated ancillary costs.
It is hoped the arena will be ready for the beginning of the athletic season in the autumn of 2028. It will address space limitations, as well as systems operations and maintenance challenges at the university’s current arena, Millett Hall.
Millett Hall opened in 1968 and originally housed one varsity sport – men’s basketball – before starting to host volleyball and women’s basketball in 1974. A renovation of the arena would cost at least $175m if new practice courts and a dedicated volleyball court were added, so the university has opted for a new-build project.
The new arena will facilitate concurrent, student-related activities and other campus events, such as commencements, concerts, creative arts performances, career fairs and more.
Miami University Gregory Crawford said: “This is a student-centred project that will create a vibrant new space intended to bring people together and support and engage our students. A new arena will provide the foundation for an events district in the heart of campus to benefit students, reinvigorate the community, and strengthen our local economy.”
Nusenda backs New Mexico arena
Meanwhile, UNM has signed a 10-year partnership with Nusenda to rename its sports arena as The Pit – Powered by Nusenda.
The Pit has a capacity of over 15,000 and is used for UNM basketball games and concerts. UNM said the deal provides an average annual value of $1.74m in support of its athletics department.
Nusenda has been a partner of the university since 1985, investing nearly $7m into various initiatives. The company is led by president and chief executive Michelle Dearholt, a two-time graduate of the university.
Dearholt said: “For more than 40 years, we’ve supported UNM students, faculty, and families with resources that strengthen their financial well-being. From our Lobo Landing branch to funding the Center for Financial Capability on campus, each step has been about deepening our relationship and creating opportunities. The Pit – Powered by Nusenda is the next chapter in our journey, and one that allows us to celebrate Lobo pride while investing in our student-athletes.”
The new partnership will include financial literacy education for UNM’s 400-plus student-athletes, focusing on personal financial wellness. Logos and signage reflecting the arena’s new name are expected to be installed prior to the start of the 2026-27 season.
