NEW YORK CITY (TND) — A migrant fatally stabbed another migrant outside of a New York City shelter on Sunday after a “verbal dispute,” according to the New York City Police Department.
Oscar Gonzalez is accused of stabbing Argeyeris Martinez near the Humanitarian Emergency Response and Relief Center in East Harlem. Gonzalez was charged with murder and aggravated criminal possession of a weapon. Both men lived at the shelter.
The shelter is one of several New York City Mayor Eric Adams has used to house the nearly 200,000 migrants that have arrived since Spring 2022 while pleading with the Biden administration for help.
In January, the city began installing security cameras at another shelter following a fight in which a migrant was stabbed, according to the New York Post. Adams urged the federal government earlier this month to help dampen migrants’ strain on New York City resources by issuing temporary work permits.
The federal government must lead on this humanitarian crisis,” the mayor said.
President Joe Biden has pushed Congress to pass legislation addressing issues posed by the southern border, which has experienced nearly 180,000 migrant encounters since October.
On Thursday, a bill addressing the southern border died in the Senate on a 43-50 vote. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., blamed the failure on Republicans despite Democrats controlling the chamber.
Trump told his MAGA allies to kill it in the in its tracks so he could exploit the issue on the campaign trail,” Sen. Schumer said. “We gave Republicans a second chance to show where they stand. Do they want to fix this so-called emergency, or do they want to show blind allegiance to the former president, even when they know he’s wrong?”
In February, the Senate killed a bill providing provisions for the border while it was tied to funding for Ukraine and Israel. House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., supported the legislation while drawing outrage from some Republicans.
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., led an effort to remove the speaker from his position, arguing he was working in a “uniparty” made up of Democrats and Republicans.
