Ed Weber has been promoted to Chief Financial Officer of MLB.

Weber, who has been with MLB since 2006, had been serving as EVP & Deputy CFO under Bob Starkey.

Starkey, MLB’s CFO since 2015, will transition into a senior advisor role under commissioner Rob Manfred. Weber said Manfred spoke with him about the promotion in late 2024, as the commissioner was talking to Starkey about his transition.

“I’m super grateful to the commissioner and appreciative,” Weber said Monday.

Weber has worked with Manfred for a while, consolidating finance departments the last couple years under the commissioner’s “One Baseball” initiative.

Weber said his main role will be to support MLB’s various business lines, including consumer products, sponsorship, media, and at the team level. “I can help them, give them advice when they ask for it, and give them data to make smart business decisions,” Weber said.

Manfred said during the World Series that MLB revenues were higher in 2024 than they were in 2023 ($11.6B). The commissioner is looking to solve the league’s RSN issue, with an eye on a national streaming package in 2028. Meanwhile, MLB’s collective bargaining agreement will expire after the 2026 season.

“I would say we’re very healthy,” Weber said. “All our business lines are growing.”

Weber said Starkey proved instrumental in helping him learn the league side of finance. Weber had been with MLB’s Advanced Media division as SVP & CFO, building out its finance infrastructure.

Weber also serves as on the Major League Alumni Marketing board.

Prior to joining MLBAM, the Penn State graduate worked in a variety of financial executive capacities at Sirius Satellite Radio.
