Cris Cyborg Vows to Win Titles in BoxingCyrbog fights in boxing on Saturday, and wants to replicate her success in MMA

Cris Cyborg returns to the ring Saturday for the fifth boxing fight of her career, having achieved the rare Grand Slam feat in women’s mixed martial arts by winning championships in four key organizations — Invicta, Strikeforce, Bellator MMA, and UFC.

Despite her accomplishments in MMA, as a traiblazer having beaten Gina Carano, Holly Holm, and Larissa Pacheco, among others, in that discipline, Cyborg has her cross-hairs on a legitimate world championship in boxing, to become one of the most accomplished athletes in all combat sports.

Cyborg told GIVEMESPORT that she fights on the 17th of May, in an event one can watch via her website, at the Tech Cu Arena in San Jose. She told us she’s not just trying to dabble in boxing, but become a legitimate world titleholder in the sport. The event is a celebration of Cyborg’s 20th anniversary in combat sports, with the fighter taking on Precious Harris McCray in a six-round bout.

Cyrbog fights in boxing on Saturday, and wants to replicate her success in MMA

Cyborg told us she wants to have two more MMA fights, and in between that, compate in boxing until she “fights for a title in boxing.”

“It’s gonna finish my career amazing, to be crowned an MMA champion and a boxing champion. That’s one of the goals. So let’s see what’s gonna happen this year and next year.”

She continued: “I always love a challenge. I’ve been training really hard and have a lot of respect for the sport of boxing. I’m excited to come to my fifth fight. It completes 20 years exactly, as 2005 I did my first fight in MMA — and it’s nice to be back in San Jose.”

Cyborg’s arrival in boxing comes at an extraordinary time for women in the sport as there’s a fierce debate over who the pound-for-pound No.1 is, between Claressa Shields and Katie Taylor, together with an upcoming trilogy bout between Taylor and Amanda Serrano, and Jake Paul’s promotional vehicle Most Valuable Promotions signing a plethora of talented women.

Cyborg was hesitant to pick a winner in the Taylor vs Serrano fight in July on Netflix, but praised the show and said it was indicative of the quality in the sport right now.

“I believe this fight is going to be a tough fight,” she said. “And I can’t wait to watch them.”

“I look forward to them both putting together a big, special night. Everybody is going to love women’s boxing and grow the sport. I think this is the number one intention.”
