SAN ANTONIO — San Antonio is getting hundreds of new affordable homes.
City Council approved four new projects to increase options across the city.
They are spread out in different parts of the city; in districts two, three, four and five.
In all, the four projects will mean more than 700 affordable homes for families who qualify.
In East San Antonio you’ll find Towne Twin Village. It’s a place Catherine Brown said changed her life.
“It’s giving me an opportunity to get out of the homeless shelter,” Brown said.
The housing area is funded by the voter approved 2022 to 2027 bond program, which in total is $1,200,000,000.
$150,000,000 of the money is going to affordable housing.
Veronica Garcia is the city’s Neighborhood and Housing Services Department Director. She said this program is delivering results.
“We’ve heard from families who are buying their first home, families who’ve been renting for all of their lives. They’ve just started a family, and now they’ll be realizing the dream of homeownership for the first time,” Garcia said.
In June 2024 City Council approved more than $17,000,000 to fund four new projects, which will make and preserve 929 homes.
The new projects are going to be built in districts two, three, four and five but they can be built in any part of San Antonio.
“In total, we have approved 24 projects for housing bond funds. These 24 projects are all throughout the city. Almost every single council district has a housing bond project because we need affordable housing in all parts of the city,” Garcia said.
“We know that it’s equally distributed. That is exactly what we’re trying to create everywhere we were, just at a opening, a ribbon cutting, if you will, in district nine a couple of months ago,” District Four Councilwoman Adriana Rocha Garcia said.
We spoke with the Councilwoman Rocha Garcia and District Five Councilwoman Teri Castillo.
Both district are located where the new projects will take place and said a critical part of the housing areas are the services built alongside them.
“A lot of the projects that we’re encouraging in my district include some mentoring opportunities for our youth, the ability for people to come in and be able to use computers at a business center,” Councilwoman Rocha Garcia said.
“It’s in alignment with the city strategic Housing Implementation Plan, which City Council adopted a couple years ago, and also ensuring that it was near transit corridors, access to jobs and opportunity and nearby schools,” Councilwoman Castillo said.
The 24 projects have brought more than 4,000 affordable homes to San Antonio. More than 1,000 are for families making less than $24,000 a year.
“As soon as many of these projects complete construction, we know units are starting to get occupied,” Councilwoman Castillo said.
“That makes me so happy, so that people get off the street,” Brown said.
