Here’s how things shake out when it comes to the top 10 most popular pooches in the country, along with Houston, Dallas, Fort Worth, Austin and San Antonio.

HOUSTON — Sixty-eight million U.S. households have a dog, according to industry data, and dog owners spent a whopping $152 billion on those four-legged family members in 2024.

A new study by U.S. News lists the top 10 most popular dog breeds in the country for 2025. They also looked at the 25 largest U.S. cities, including Houston, Dallas, Fort Worth, Austin and San Antonio.

Editor’s note: The above video originally aired in March.

Nationwide, Labrador retrievers have moved into the top spot in 2025, knocking the tiny chihuahuas out of first place. Golden retrievers held on to the No. 3 spot, while American pit bull terriers jumped all the way from eighth to fourth place.

German shepherds, French bulldogs, goldendoodles, shih tzus and Yorkshire terriers dropped in the rankings but remain in the top 10.

Pit bulls were knocked out of the top 10 by dachshunds, a newcomer.
