The Spanish club sets up an annual altar for Day of the Dead.

A look inside the Spanish Club

If you are looking for fellowship, friendship and various types of delicious Hispanic food, look no further than the Spanish Club! The club organizes various events all of which are accompanied by food. In interviewing the club’s president, Elena Romero, a senior Spanish major on the pre-med track, there was a lot to be learned about the club’s objectives and success so far.

Romero, who has been the president for four months, provided some insight into what goes on in the club. The club puts on a range of events. These events always feature food, either ordered or homemade, including pupusas and tacos. A typical event is a game night, a trivia night, a movie-watching night or just a social hangout. However, they also do special events for holidays and different traditions.

Despite being oriented to celebrate Hispanic culture, the club is relatively diverse. When asked what her favorite aspect of the Spanish club was, Romero said, “I love that it gives us a space for all Hispanics–even non-Hispanics– to come celebrate that culture. A lot of people end up coming, including all the people from actual Spanish classes, which is nice; there’s a mixture of different classes, different class rankings, different groups of people.” Romero strongly encourages people of all cultural backgrounds to participate in the club’s events.

During the interview, Romero recounted her favorite memory from the club’s events. She said, “My favorite was our Christmas event. Not a lot of people came because of finals, but the few that came stayed there, and we all watched “The Grinch”, and we had tamales. We were just there eating all the food since there was so much. We just ate so much, and it was delicious.”

Come to find out for yourself what the club is like! You just might develop a deeper appreciation for Hispanic culture and food! If you are interested in finding out more about the club or you would like to join, email eromero@udallas.edu.
