The City of McAllen Parks & Recreation Department officially celebrated the ribbon cutting of the new Multipurpose Pavilion with an energetic community celebration filled with excitement, family fun, and the announcement of a transformational partnership with the Dallas Stars Hockey Club.

The new partnership will introduce future hockey programming and sports development opportunities to the Rio Grande Valley, creating new pathways for local youth and families to stay active, learn new skills, and experience the fast-growing sport of hockey right here at home. For many children in attendance, the event represented more than the opening of a new facility. It symbolized access, opportunity, and the chance to dream bigger through sports and recreation.

Designed as a flexible and modern recreational venue, the Multipurpose Pavilion will host hockey programs, fitness classes, youth activities, community events, and a variety of year-round programming aimed at bringing the community together through sports and recreation.

This new facility represents a continued investment in accessible, high-quality recreation for local families, providing a safe and welcoming space where children and youth can explore new sports, build confidence, and develop healthy habits. By expanding programming options close to home, the pavilion helps remove barriers to participation while creating more opportunities for positive youth development, family engagement, and community connection through active play and recreation.

“This pavilion represents far more than a building,” said City Manager Ike Tawil. “It represents opportunity for our children, stronger connections for our families, and continued investment in the quality of life that makes McAllen such a special community. We are proud to partner with the Dallas Stars to bring new experiences and expanded recreational opportunities to the Rio Grande Valley.”

“It felt incredibly emotional to see the excitement from the kids and families as they stepped into this new space,” said Al Montoya, Vice President of Cultural Growth and Strategy for the Dallas Stars. “You could see it in their faces. For many of us, the love of hockey started with simply having a place to play and dream. That is what this partnership is about. We want young people in the Rio Grande Valley to know this sport belongs to them too, and we are excited to help grow the game and create lasting opportunities through this beautiful new facility.”

“The energy inside the pavilion today showed exactly why partnerships like this matter,” said Matt Bowman, Chief Revenue Officer for the Dallas Stars. “This facility creates opportunities for youth development, healthy lifestyles, and meaningful community engagement. We are excited to work alongside the City of McAllen to expand access to hockey and create memorable experiences for families across the Valley.”

The Multipurpose Pavilion is expected to become a regional hub for recreation, youth sports, wellness programming, and community events, helping inspire a new generation of athletes while strengthening community pride throughout the Rio Grande Valley.
