I’ve often felt that sports games get something of a bad reputation. The annual releases are criticized for feeling the same every year beyond roster updates, and while I agree that sports games don’t really need to be yearly, if the actual simulation of whatever sport it’s targeting feels decent enough, there’s not much reason to change the game’s core systems.

That being said, 2K’s NBA franchise has made major strides in the last several years in its attempt to approximate the game of basketball in a virtual setting. That often comes in a multitude of ways, from the way it handles its presentation to the actual on-court action. The latest iteration, NBA 2K27, doesn’t alter anything drastic and feels very familiar from the last few years, but given how good 2K has been lately, that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

EA Sports Hits 2K Where It Hurts With College Basketball Back After 16-Year Hiatus

2K will soon have competition in the virtual basketball sim genre.

What NBA 2K27 does offer, however, is one of the most complete, feature-packed basketball sims I’ve played in recent memory. It isn’t reinventing the proverbial wheel, but it is a game that, if you are able to get into, will become something that’s rather hard to put down. I’ve usually used sports games as a kind of cool-down experience, a sort of buffer between huge JRPGs and story-based games. While it’s hard to imagine NBA 2K27 replacing NHL 2K11 as my cool-down sports game, it’s an experience worth diving into either way.

Ball is Life

In the battle for sports game supremacy, there’s been a constant debate that will seemingly never end in regard to whether a simulation is more entertaining than an arcade-like experience. While I’ve always been drawn more towards simulation experiences, I believe there’s room in the world for both. If we can have a world where games like NBA 2K exist alongside NBA Street and NHL Hitz, I think we’re doing alright.

NBA 2K’s focus on simulation has been a source of frustration at times, however. If you don’t get the smaller details right, they can add up and create a frustrating experience. Sports games that are attempting to create a one-to-one translation of the sport really need those small details to work, and when it doesn’t, it usually results in a game that feels needlessly complex. More buttons are needed for smaller micro actions, and with more buttons comes more explanations, and it just all starts to feel a bit gloopy.

While it can sometimes feel a bit awkward when those smaller details don’t work, developer Visual Concepts has been doing an excellent job at finding a speed and tempo that matches the real on-screen action you see every week. NBA 2K27 looks like basketball, it sounds like basketball, and most importantly, it feels like you’re in the middle of the action. The way the ball feels when you’re dribbling and moving with it is such a satisfying feeling, and passing has a crisp, responsive energy to it that makes being a playmaker just as much fun as being a net driver and taking the ball to the hoop.

On the whole, the actual gameplay of NBA 2K27 isn’t that drastically different from previous iterations. Whether that’s good or bad depends on how you’ve felt about the last few years. Perhaps the worst part of 2K27’s minute-to-minute basketball action is the stick shooting, which just doesn’t feel great. The green bar where you’re supposed to release the shot often feels completely arbitrary, and it sometimes feels like the game randomly decides whether you’ve hit the mark or not. It feels less like a skilled shot, and more of a lucky break, which isn’t the vibe I think any of us want out of a sports game.

A Host of Mixed Features

When you first load up into NBA 2K27, you may notice that it is literally overflowing with features and modes. The good news is that all of them are expertly crafted with fine details and intricate systems, guaranteed to make sure that you won’t get bored too quickly. It’s quite likely that you’ll find a mode you really like and just play that forever. I know that’s certainly what happens to me with sports games, as I’m more of a single-player, offline person.

The bad news is that not every mode is a winner. In fact, I’d say the game is a bit lopsided in that regard, as the less interesting modes outweigh the good ones. While it has an absolutely insane number of ways to interact with it, which is something I genuinely do appreciate, it often feels like the game may benefit from having fewer modes and a hard focus on the actual gameplay, which is when the game has routinely been at its most entertaining over the years.

NBA 2K27 looks like basketball, it sounds like basketball, and most importantly, it feels like you’re in the middle of the action.

Unfortunately, the main cinematic story mode is just painfully dry, and feels rather dated in 2026. This type of highly cinematic story mode with questionable voice acting and linear pathways isn’t terribly entertaining anymore. It may have been somewhat novel a decade ago, but it just doesn’t feel like the right move for a sports game. There are some stand-out modes, however.

The GM and franchise modes are top-tier, and are genuinely some of the most in-depth, outrageously realistic simulations of front office life I’ve ever played in a sports game. Even that feels overly complicated, however, as modes have their own sub-modes, and it just all feels like a mess. Considering how much these games routinely cost, however, perhaps a plethora of modes is something worth celebrating in an odd way.

Who Run the World? Girls

Without a doubt, the most entertaining mode in NBA 2K27 is The W. As it has been since it was first introduced in NBA 2K21, The W is a WNBA single-player career mode that locks in on the most enjoyable aspects of a game like this. The focus is on being a player and playing games, with some light story and progression elements. It reminds me a lot of Live the Life mode from NHL 14, where it was simple, straightforward and just plain fun.

Aside from just jumping into a game with your favorite NBA or WNBA team, this is as close as the game gets to being able to combine its excellent sim gameplay with a sort of loose story mode that lets you feel like a superstar player making your way through a long career. I think the genuine appeal of sports games is less about the modes and mini-games, and more about the satisfying feeling of making a big play. There’s not much in gaming that feels as good as sinking a three-pointer and hearing the home crowd go absolutely nuts. It’s magic.

The GM and franchise modes are top-tier, and are genuinely some of the most in-depth, outrageously realistic simulations of front office life I’ve ever played in a sports game.

NBA 2K27’s PC performance is as expected, as Visual Concepts has always prioritized smooth, optimal performance on the platform. It’s been that way ever since the franchise started appearing on PC, and that rather unsurprising trend continues with 2K27.

Whether you will enjoy NBA 2K27 is entirely dependent on what you think of the previous iterations. In terms of a standard game of simulated basketball, nothing much has changed. If you’ve loved the latest 2K games, this is more of the same. At the same time, it’s more of the same, which may or may not be terribly appealing to you. Either way, if you are in the market for a basketball game and haven’t played 2K in a while, this is a great time to jump back in.

NBA 2K27 is a basketball video game. That’s pretty much the long and short of it. If it sounds boring, it’s because it is. I don’t think that’s inherently bad in sports games, however, as the familiarity of the game is what makes us tune into our favorite sports team every single week. At the same time, however, it’s overstuffed with fluff modes and the cinematic story mode is abysmal. If you just want a good basketball game to play with friends or solo, this is as good as it gets.
