The Chicago Bulls are hardly the only team looking to make a major coaching change this season. Several clubs are reconfiguring their front offices and benches, too.
Still, there are only 30 head coaching gigs out there — and our Bulls appear to be prioritizing mostly young, up-and-coming options.
Is this, in theory, a cheaper approach for the Reinsdorfs? Obviously, but it could also prove to be the more prudent approach for a team that likely won’t be sustainably good again for years.
Bulls Bullets — May 22, 2026
- Our Chicago Bulls are slated to have some major competition for San Antonio Spurs assistant coach Sean Sweeney. Beyond the Bulls job, he’s also said to be in the running for the Dallas Mavericks’ and Orlando Magic’s respective vacancies, per Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints and The Stein Line’s Jake Fischer.
- Northbrook’s own Jon Scheyer is apparently another marquee name new Mavericks president Masai Ujiri is exploring, per Fischer. During his four seasons since taking over for Mike Krzyzewski, Scheyer has led his alma mater to a combined 124-25 record, four Round of 32 tilts, three Elite Eight appearances and a 2025 Final Four berth. The Dallas Morning News’ Mike Curtis indicates that another reported future Bulls interviewee, Minnesota Timberwolves lead assistant Micah Nori, could be on Ujiri’s short list. Denver Nuggets assistant coach Jared Dudley, Mavericks lead assistant Frank Vogel (once Dudley’s head coach on the champion 2020 Los Angeles Lakers), and ex-Bulls head coaches Tom Thibodeau and Billy Donovan could all be in the running for the gig, too.

- The Mavericks might have to get in line for Donovan’s services, too. Fischer reports that the Hall of Famer has emerged as the leading candidate to replace former Orlando head coach Jamahl Mosley. Donovan has already been in dialogue with Orlando president Jeff Weltman, and is expected to chat with Weltman in the flesh soon. Mosley managed to put together several seasons of strong defense and turn the young Magic into a perpetual playoff team during his five seasons at the helm, although Orlando failed to advance out of the first round. Mosley was quickly snatched up by the New Orleans Pelicans this offseason, replacing interim head coach James Borrego.
- Sweeney’s Spurs could be without two of their four most important players as their 1-1 Western Conference Finals series against the Oklahoma City Thunder heads to San Antonio on Friday. The Stein Line’s Marc Stein reports that both two-time All-Star point guard De’Aaron Fox and key reserve guard Dylan Harper are considered questionable to play, thanks to a right ankle sprain and a sore right adductor, respectively.

- On the Oklahoma City side, All-Star small forward Jalen Williams is said to be day-to-day after exiting a Game 2 win over San Antonio with a left hamstring ailment, per ESPN’s Shams Charania. Williams missed the entire second round and two first-round contests with an earlier left hamstring injury.
- Former Bulls guard Alex Caruso has stepped up in light of the Williams injury and some inconsistent scoring output from Ajay Mitchell and Chet Holmgren in this series. He’s the third-leading scorer in the West Finals, with his 24.0 points a night behind just Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Victor Wembanyama’s numbers. The two-time All-Defensive Team guard has been averaging 24.0 points.
