This past summer was expected to be the summer of Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo. Prior to the end of the 2024-25 season, ESPN’s Shams Charania shared that the Greek Freak was “open-minded” to a trade.

Many expected Antetokounmpo to request a trade and possibly get traded; however, the 30-year-old and the Bucks shared their desire to make things work. Antetokounmpo was adamant about wanting to make things work, but it appears that he wanted a change of scenery.
Charania shared in a recent piece that Antetokounmpo was exploring a potential change of teams with the New York Knicks as his preferred destination.
“Several teams were discussed internally, but one emerged as the only place Antetokounmpo wanted to play outside of Milwaukee: the New York Knicks, multiple sources with direct knowledge of the situation told ESPN,” Charania noted.
“The Bucks picked up the Knicks’ call on Antetokounmpo, and the sides engaged in conversations for a window of time in August, league sources said, but the teams never got traction on a deal,” Charania added.

Although Antetokounmpo is the cornerstone of Milwaukee, it is clear that the Bucks do not have the proper pieces to compete for a title, and that may be the case for the next handful of years, considering their trade assets or lack thereof.
The Greek Freak wants to desperately win another championship, and his best chance to do so may be with another team.
The Knicks are entering this season with high championship aspirations, while the Bucks hope to avoid the play-in tournament and being part of the lowly Eastern Conference. The two squads are in two different sports as the season approaches, and if the Bucks start the season slowly, the Antetokounmpo trade rumors will only amplify.
New York has the pieces to make a significant trade for the nine-time All-Star. With the East wide open, don’t be surprised if the Knicks push all their chips in the middle for Antetokounmpo.
