A single NCAA Transfer Portal Window is hours away from formal adoption.
Late Tuesday afternoon, the NCAA’s DI Administrative Committee approved the “notification of transfer window dates for DI football.” It faces one more vote in Wednesday, again considered a mere formality, to be finalized upon conclusion of meetings at close of business Wednesday.
The NCAA also revealed that it is further examining the head-coaching exception to the Transfer Portal.
Per its Wednesday release:
“In response to another referral from the Administrative Committee, the FBS Oversight Committee discussed the head coach departure exception to the notification-of-transfer period,” the NCAA statement read. “That exception currently allows student-athletes 30 days to enter the Transfer Portal, beginning the calendar day after head coaches depart or announce departure from their school.”
That window is also expected to be reduced and amended to coincide with a new coach’s arrival; Yahoo!’s Ross Dellenger noted a 15-day expectation.
As it previously outlined late last month when it announced the single but expanded Portal Window, the NCAA said the following of its impending measure:
“The Division I Administrative Committee, which meets Oct. 7-8, must approve the change before it takes effect.
“This 15-day notification-of-transfer period would replace the current structure, in which football student-athletes may initiate notification during a 20-day period in December.
“Student-athletes who are members of teams that participate in a postseason contest on or after Jan. 12 may initiate notification during a consecutive-five-day period beginning the day after their team’s final postseason contest.
“In response to another referral from the Administrative Committee, the FBS Oversight Committee discussed the head coach departure exception to the notification-of-transfer period. That exception currently allows student-athletes 30 days to enter the Transfer Portal, beginning the calendar day after head coaches depart or announce departure from their school.
“The FBS Oversight Committee will continue discussing changes to that exception, including the timing and duration, during next week’s meeting.”
As FootballScoop previously noted, the new NCAA Transfer Portal Window would overlap with both the annual NCAA Convention in the Washington, D.C., suburbs that runs from Jan. 13-16, 2026, as well as the annual AFCA Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina, which is scheduled to operate Jan. 11-13, 2026.
But the NCAA has felt strongly in its positioning for a single-portal window in football, something with “near-universal support” among coaches, numerous sources told FootballScoop.
Additionally, while the NCAA felt strongly in that stance, it acknowledged a need to expand the timespan of the single-portal measure.
“Athletes want longer than 10 (days), anything longer than 10,” a source with direct knowledge told FootballScoop. “The athletes want more time to negotiate and want more time for leverage.”
