Playing in the AFC East, the New England Patriots and Miami Dolphins are direct competitors. Some would even argue that they’re rivals.
Yet, that didn’t stop these two AFC East division foes from executing a rare inner-division trade on Monday.

On Monday, reports indicated that the Patriots were releasing offensive lineman Caedan Wallace. Hours later, those plans changed.
According to the Patriots’ press release, they’ve managed to trade the 26-year-old offensive tackle/guard to the Dolphins instead. The Patriots are including a 2029 seventh-round pick as part of the deal, and they’ll be receiving a 2028 sixth-round pick from the Dolphins in return.
The Patriots made Wallace the 68th overall pick in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft. He started just two games and made 10 appearances since arriving in the league two years ago. Wallace played 137 snaps on offense in that time, and another 40 on special teams.

Now he heads to an unproven Dolphins team with two more years left on his contract. While he will be getting a fresh start, Wallace will still have to earn a spot on the Dolphins’ final 53-man roster, but he’ll have a few weeks to make a strong impression before the roster cutdown date arrives on Aug. 30.
