The Buffalo band Comienzos is set to play at the inaugural Extravagancia Latina at the Route 5 Events Center in Dunkirk Aug. 24.

A three-part celebration of Hispanic culture, music, and food is coming to the Route 5 Event Center in Dunkirk on Saturday, Aug. 24.

Extravagancia Latina starts with a Family Fiesta from 5 to 7 p.m. The fiesta will feature free traditional Hispanic foods from Taqueria Mexicana; live music by Sara Rodriguez; displays and demonstrations by traditional artisan Jenny Otero and tradition bearer Alma Segura (owner of Alma Latina Mex Restaurant in Dunkirk); and crafts and games.

Representatives from the IDEA Coalition, Dunkirk Public Library, United Way, CREATE Project, Faces in the Crowd Program and other organizations will help with the activities.

The rest of Extravagancia Latina is geared toward an adult audience. The second part begins at 8 p.m. with a performance by the Buffalo band Comienzos. The quartet interprets a rich repertoire of Central and South American music spanning from traditional folk songs to modern pop in a crossover jazz format. It features SUNY Fredonia alum Jamie Sunshine on marimba, Jeremy Spindler on accordion, Brian DeJesus on upright bass and Brian Mckenna on percussion.

The performance is set to last until 10 p.m. Tickets will be $10 at the door. A cash bar will be available.

The final part of the Extravagancia features Latin dance music from 10 p.m. to midnight, with DJ Rasta Spock of Kinetic Entertainment running the show.

Extravagancia Latina is a CREATE Project event presented with support from the Northern Chautauqua Community Foundation and in partnership with Kinetic Entertainment, Taqueria Mexicana Restaurant, and the Dunkirk Public Library.
