New stipend pays San Antonians to write about their neighborhoods

Every Saturday, a new member of our community shares their heart for their neighborhood with San Antonio Report readers in a popular regular feature called “Where I Live.” The feature is about as well-known as any we do, and readers across the city consistently tell us that they love reading about their city, seen through the eyes of their neighbors.

Historically, this has been a volunteer effort. Community members send in their drafts as submissions to be considered for the series, writing an essay sharing what they love about their neighborhood — and what they envision for its future.

Thanks to a new sponsorship generously funded through a partnership with Know Your Neighbor, the storytelling initiative of the H. E. Butt Foundation, starting today we will offer a $250 stipend to San Antonio authors to write these pieces — reimbursing their time and effort in a new way. To be considered for publication, submit your essay or inquire by providing your contact information through this form.

The San Antonio Report’s “Where I Live” series aims to showcase our diverse city and region by spotlighting its many vibrant neighborhoods. For years, the series has expanded, culminating in an interactive map that you can search, click through and learn from.

As part of our ongoing efforts as a newsroom to highlight San Antonio voices more intentionally and equitably, this partnership with the H.E. Butt Foundation and Know Your Neighbor will allow new voices to emerge by reducing the barriers to participation in this popular series. And if the stipend isn’t necessary for you — but you’d still like to write about your neighborhood — please indicate that you would like to “pay it forward” to the next author when we get in touch with you about your submission.

If you’ve wanted to write a “Where I Live” piece but haven’t been able to find the time or were otherwise hesitant to commit to the process of volunteering, now is the time to submit your story! Which neighborhood on our map is missing? Which voices haven’t we heard from yet?

Please share this opportunity with the engaged community members and aspiring writers you know best. We would love to hear from you!
