NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — Air traffic control staffing shortages disrupted flights at the three major airports serving the New York metropolitan area on Monday, according to advisories from the US Federal Aviation Administration.

The FAA in its advisories said it expected the New York market to experience travel issues throughout the evening.

The agency temporarily halted flights into John F. Kennedy International Airport, Newark Liberty International Airport and LaGuardia Airport.

As of late afternoon, arrivals into JFK were experiencing the worst delays, with average wait times topping two hours.

The FAA slowed flights into John F. Kennedy, LaGuardia, Newark and Philadelphia International airports because of severe weather and staffing constraints, the agency said in a statement.

The FAA has faced a longstanding air traffic controller shortage that it’s tried to resolve by offering incentives, such as bonuses for academy graduates assigned to hard-to-staff facilities. The FAA and Transportation Department also kicked off a campaign earlier this year targeting video gamers for the job.
