New York City FC announced today that it has claimed Defender Matt Miazga off waivers through the end of the 2026 season.
The New Jersey native arrives to New York City after spending the past five seasons with FC Cincinnati, making 108 appearances recording two goals and six assists across multiple competitions, including the MLS Regular Season, MLS Cup Playoffs, Concacaf Champions Cup, Leagues Cup, and the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. In 2023, the Defender earned MLS Defender of the Year, MLS Best XI, and MLS All-Star honors while helping FC Cincinnati capture the Supporters Shield.
“We’re excited to welcome Matt to New York City,” said Sporting Director Todd Dunivant. “Matt brings experience, mentality, and a competitive edge to our backline. His leadership will be valuable as we enter the final stretch of the season.”
Prior to joining FC Cincinnati, Miazga spent time with Chelsea FC, making two Premier League appearances in addition to gaining experience on loan with SBV Vitesse, FC Nantes, Reading F.C., R.S.C. Anderlecht, and Deportivo Alavés. Across those spells, the Defender made 168 appearances, scoring eight goals and providing three assists.
Notably, Miazga helped SBV Vitesse capture the 2016–17 KNVB Cup, scoring in a Round of 16 win as part of the Club’s run to the title. The Cup marked the first major trophy in the Dutch Club’s history and secured the side a spot in the UEFA Europa League, where the Defender later featured.

The Defender began his career in the Red Bull New York Academy before signing with the First Team as a Homegrown player in 2013. The Defender made 42 appearances, recording one goal and two assists across all competitions, and helped the Club capture the MLS Supporters Shield in 2013 and 2015.
Internationally, the Defender has earned 28 caps with the U.S. Men’s National Team, tallying one goal and two assists across all competitions including the Concacaf Gold Cup, Concacaf Nations League, FIFA World Cup qualifiers, and friendlies. In 2017, Miazga helped the United States capture the Gold Cup, scoring his first International goal in the Group Stage win over Nicaragua.
