You may want to save that trip to the DMV for another day.

Department of Motor Vehicles offices and services across New York state will close from 2 p.m. Friday until Wednesday morning as the agency upgrades its technology systems around Presidents Day weekend, according to officials.

All in-person appointments, online transactions and phone services will be suspended during the closure, the DMV said.

The department is encouraging New Yorkers who need to renew their driver’s license or non-driver ID before the temporary shutdown to do so online.

Residents looking to change their political party enrollment for the 2026 primary elections through the DMV’s website must do so by Feb. 13 at 2 p.m., the agency said. They can also use the state Board of Elections’ voter registration portal to update their party by the Feb. 14 deadline.

Officials said the tech overhaul will give DMV customers better service and make the job easier for staff.

“With one consolidated, state-of-the-art system, we will be replacing hundreds of software applications, some of which date back to the days of Nelson Rockefeller,” said Commissioner Mark Schroeder. “I truly believe it will give our staff the ability to serve New Yorkers better, faster and more comprehensively than ever before.”

Officials are asking customers for patience as the upgrades are rolled out.

A second major tech revamp at the DMV is scheduled for 2028 as part of the agency’s efforts to streamline its operations, officials said.
